Tanka line - Vlasta Nussdorfer
"One day I unexpectedly "fell" into the main hearing, without even knowing the case."
HARDBOUND
Vlasta Nussdorfer is a lawyer who has dedicated most of her life to the prosecution. In her thirty-five years, she has gone from trainee to deputy public prosecutor, district, higher and supreme state prosecutor. We were last able to read her autobiography, Something I Want to Tell You, but this time we have before us The Thin Line, a poignant and fascinating book about the demanding and difficult work of a prosecutor. The author Vlasta Nussdorfer explains: "For more than three decades, in the prosecution service, I have followed the extraordinary fates of people whose peaceful everyday lives and sometimes even their freedom were taken away by a moment of carelessness, indiscretion, sadness, rage, disappointment or other emotions, and for many, their entire lives. There were many reasons for crossing the thin line that separates what is permitted from what is prohibited, good from evil, life from death. On the side of the dead, abused, raped or robbed will stand the unwavering characters of the prosecutors, opposite them the lawyers of the unfortunate defendants in one way or another, towards whom you will feel a range of very different emotions, and the verdict in the name of the people will be pronounced by judges dressed in black robes. Will you agree with them or would you rule differently? "The Thin Line offers numerous true stories that the author has experienced in her career, in which we find both sad heroes and unfortunate victims, as well as some of the pitfalls of justice. The book thoroughly and experiencedly presents the work of the state prosecutor as a criminal prosecution body and includes the thoughts of famous prosecutors, lawyers and judges. Although the work is full of sad and tragic fates, it is important and necessary reading for a better understanding of the many moral dilemmas that prosecutors face in their work. The book, which at times reads like a crime novel, will keep you glued to your seat, and it will also make you think about what is more relentless and shocking - fiction or real life.
