In today's world – a time of loneliness – reading is an activity that enriches inner and social life, as it contributes to linguistic richness and literacy, which in turn increases learning ability, success at work, and in personal life. Slovenian school and cultural policy do not sufficiently establish reading habits – while the reading of children is taken care of in primary school, reading culture is an almost neglected area in the process of adult lifelong learning. A deep and sincere conversation about read books, especially artistic ones, is an important builder of self-confidence. Low self-esteem is characteristic of the Slovenian population, and reading is a mechanism that can improve it, thereby expanding human consciousness and solidifying the position of a critical citizen.
About the author:
Manca Košir (1948–2024), professor and publicist, published several epistolary and scholarly books, collections of columns, and poems. Among other things, she was also a tireless and unforgettable inspirer of reading and the establishment of reading circles, which is why her birthday, March 5, became the National Reading Day. This reader includes a selection of her essays, columns, articles, and writings about books. The themes she contemplated and constantly returned to include interpersonal relationships, ethics, media, knowledge, love, books, art, aging, death... Her essayistic writing, intertwined with personal stories and pedagogical eros, aims to improve the world, increase sensitivity to interpersonal relationships and coexistence, and teach us how to be human. Or, to quote something Manca was very fond of:"A human is an angel with one wing. That's why people can only fly when embraced."
