Museum Water Bottle

In Ljubljana, untreated, natural drinking water flows from the taps. The next time you crave fresh water, fill your Muzejska voda bottle with unique drinking water from one of the many Ljubljana drinking fountains, because clean water is the greatest gift you can give yourself.

The City Museum of Ljubljana, in collaboration with JP Vodovod-Kanalizacija and as part of the project Ljubljana - Green Capital of Europe 2016, presented the central exhibition on the theme of Water, which also included a special project Museum Water, with which the museum symbolically preserves drinking water for the future and thus highlights the importance of clean drinking water not only in our region but in the broader global context.

"Museum water is essentially a bottle designed to have the imprint of a hand. The handprint on the bottle was contributed by a resident of a small village in the Nubian mountains, where people struggle to access everyday drinking water under extremely difficult conditions."

The fingerprint on the bottle carries symbolic meanings – drinking water is a symbol of life and the essence of human future, which is why we must constantly be aware of its value and the fact that it is not abundantly available on our planet.

The name Museum Water has a paradoxical meaning, for if water were to actually become a museum exhibit, it would mean that at that very moment there would no longer be any museums, as humanity would have gone extinct in such a case. With the call "let's preserve water for the future," the Museum warns that we must not allow water to actually become a museum exhibit.

Slovenia is one of the few countries with rich reserves of high-quality drinking water. Clean drinking water is our specialty and a landmark, and also one of the reasons why Ljubljana was given the special honor of being declared the Green Capital of Europe in 2016. Museum water is an opportunity and a chance for people from different backgrounds to exchange knowledge about water, about water management, about water sources, water pollution, the social role of water, about wars for water, and corporate interventions regarding water.

The Museum Water project was created in collaboration with the Toma Križnar Foundation and the Ljubljana company VO-KA. The bottles, produced in the Hrastnik Glassworks, were designed by Darko Pokorn, New Collectivism in collaboration with Toma Križnar.
