While some authors (Samuel Huntington, Holm Sundhaussen, Edgar Hösch, etc.) interpret the “West” as a cohesive unit, often in opposition to the “non-West”, other authors (e.g. Larry Wolff, Maria Todorova) show how fluid the boundaries of the mental constructs of “East” and “West” are. The relationships that were formed in the past have changed dramatically in the last twenty years since the end of the Cold War. Some countries in SEE consider the EU and NATO as guarantors of national sovereignty, national traditions and culture. How do these recent changes affect the way we think about Europe, the West and ourselves?
Researchers are increasingly questioning the significance of collective legacies and are focusing on those identities, cultures, and histories that have traditionally been marked by “intermediacy.” This challenge is particularly relevant for the humanities in SEE, a region with its own capabilities and perspectives.
