Louis XIV took over the realm in 1661, at just twenty-three years old. In the fifty years of his reign, he ensured that France dominated the political and cultural life of Europe. He outlined a complete absolute monarchy. He was a lover of all forms of art, and among other things, he built the magnificent Palace of Versailles with its splendid gardens.
